Furness Education and Skills

The Furness Opportunities and Challenges Report, 2021, describes the circumstances in which the people of Furness live, their challenges and their opportunities. It identifies the Furness area in South Cumbria as one of striking contrasts.

Challenges facing children and young people identified in the report include:

Janet Garner, Future Workforce Director at BAE Systems; David Beeby, Chair of Cumbria Community Foundation; Lauren Newby of GC Insights, who authored the report; and Professor Julie Mennell, Vice Chancellor of the University of Cumbria
  • A low proportion of young and working age people
  • Relatively low levels of high-level skills
  • Above average youth unemployment
  • High levels of deprivation in particular areas
  • Above average proportion of lone parent families with dependent children
  • High rates of childhood obesity
  • High rate of teenage pregnancies
  • Poor educational attainment, particularly in deprived areas

The Furness area also has a great deal to offer children and young people as a place to live, study and enjoy fulfilling lives. Planned major investments locally present an opportunity to retain our young people to live and work in the area. To achieve this, we need our young people to thrive and realise their potential.

The research into the opportunities and challenges facing Furness identified that a more aligned and co-ordinated approach to extra-curricular and enrichment (EC&E) activity could help to meet identified needs in the area.

Independent consultants ekosgen, in collaboration with Little Lion Research, were appointed by Cumbria Community Foundation to undertake a study examining Strategic Approaches to the Delivery of Extra Curricular and Enrichment Activity in Furness.
