Better Tomorrows Award Criteria


The Better Tomorrows Awards celebrate the inspiring individuals and projects making a real difference in the lives of young people across Cumbria. We invite nominations in three categories: Youth Worker of the Year, Youth Project of the Year, and Young Volunteer of the Year. Each category recognises excellence in youth work, guided by the core values of empowerment, equality, participation, and education. Nominees should demonstrate outstanding impact, creativity, and commitment to supporting young people. Full criteria and nomination guidance can be found below.

1. Youth Worker of the Year

Sponsored by Nuclear Waste Services

Purpose: To recognise an outstanding youth worker who has made a significant impact on the lives of young people.

Nominees should demonstrate:
• A strong commitment to the core values of youth work: empowerment, equality, participation, and education.
• Innovative and inclusive approaches to engaging young people.
• Evidence of positive outcomes for young people through their practice.
• A collaborative spirit, working effectively with other professionals, organisations, and communities.
• Dedication to personal and professional development.

2. Youth Project of the Year

Sponsored by Dodd & Co

Purpose: To celebrate a youth project that has delivered exceptional outcomes for young people.

Nominees should demonstrate:
• Clear alignment with youth work values and principles.
• Strong youth participation in planning, delivery, and evaluation.
• Measurable impact on young people’s development, wellbeing, or opportunities.
• Creativity in addressing local needs and challenges.
• Evidence of sustainability, partnership working, and community engagement.

3. Young Volunteer of the Year

Sponsored by Mott McDonald

Purpose: To honour a young person (aged 25 and under) who has shown exceptional dedication and leadership through volunteering.

Nominees should demonstrate:
• A commitment to making a difference in their community or youth setting.
• Leadership, initiative, and responsibility in their volunteering role.
• Positive influence on peers and contribution to a supportive environment.
• Personal growth and learning through their volunteering journey.
• Embodiment of youth work values in their actions and attitude.

Nominations have now closed. Winners will be announced at the Better Tomorrows Youth Work & Celebration Event on 12 November at Carlisle Youth Zone.
