Member, Lake District National Park Authority 1997-2001. High Sheriff of Cumbria 1997-8. D.L. Cumbria 1985. Vice Lord-Lieutenant 2006-2012.

Trustee, Cumbria Community Foundation 1997-2005, (Chairman 1997-2002). Vice-President 2005- . Trustee The Calvert Trust 1976-2006 (Chairman of Council 2002-6). Trustee The Wordsworth Trust 1977-2000, Fellow 2000- . Vice-President The Tennyson Society, 1984- . President The Royal Forestry Society, 2003-5. Chairman and President of Keswick Beekeepers Association from time to time.

Married to Clare. Two sons. All members of CCF and have always had their homes in Cumbria. Four grandchildren.
