Grants for young people aged 11-21 born and residing in the old county of Cumberland (pre-1974 boundaries) who are from low-income households or facing ‘challenging circumstances’ to support travel abroad for educational purposes. Priority will be given to those residing in the borough of Workington or the urban district of Maryport.

Who can apply?
• Individuals aged 11-21 who were born in the old county of Cumberland (excluding the City of Carlisle)* from a low-income household, or facing ‘challenging circumstances’ with support from a referee; and
• who are studying or who have completed a course of study of not less than two years at a place of secondary or Further Education in one of the districts of old Cumberland, excluding Carlisle.
*Individuals born in Carlisle will be eligible if mother was a resident of the old county of Cumberland (excluding the City of Carlisle) at the time of the individual’s birth.
Low Income Households
We support individuals from households on benefits or working with a low income. A household is likely to be eligible for a grant if the household’s main carer receives one of the following means-tested benefits:
• Council Tax Support
• Housing Benefit
• Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
• Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
• Income Support
• Pension Credit
• Tax Credits (Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit)
• Universal Credit
An individual, from a low-income household but not in receipt of any benefits, may still be eligible. Additional information and evidence about the household income will be required and we will need to speak to someone to confirm the household income and situation.
Examples of travel supported:
• school or youth organisation trip abroad
• gap year activities abroad
• work-experience activities abroad
What the Fund will not support in addition to our normal exclusions:
• groups
• family holidays
• trips in the UK
How much can you apply for?
Grants will normally be between £400 – £1,200 over one year.
