Young carers across Allerdale and Copeland have been given extra support thanks to a £33,000 grant from Nuclear Management Partners Ltd (NMP).
The NMP Community Fund grant, administered by Cumbria Community Foundation was awarded to West Cumbria Carers. They will use the money to deliver additional 1-1 sessions to young people, who often work up to 50 hours a week to care for loved ones without any other help.

Michelle Watson, Young Carers Project Leader at West Cumbria Carers said: “The West Cumbria Carers Young Carers project is extremely grateful for this funding from NMP. This will help towards support for an often forgot about group in the community and it can be hard to access funding for vulnerable groups of young people.”
West Cumbria Carers’ 1-1 sessions will ensure that each young carer’s needs are addressed appropriately. These sessions will give them support in staying in school and completing their education and ensure that their caring role is better understood by schools and their peers.
Gary McKeating, NMP Head of Socioeconomics, said “NMP is delighted to be able to support this fantastic organisation. Young carers have to take on responsibilities way beyond their years to care for someone in their family. We hope our donation helps ensure that young carers living in our communities can enjoy the everyday activities of being a child, such as going to school and seeing their friends.”
Annalee Holliday Grants and Donor Services and Communications Officer said: “Young carers are often put in difficult situations and this funding will provide support to help them cope better and offer them the respite they need. NMP Ltd and the Community Foundation recognise the important work West Cumbria Carers is doing, which makes a real impact on the lives of young people.”
The award comes as part of a £333,000 total spend from the NMP Community Fund, which is still accepting applications for the next round of funding. The deadline for applications is Friday 19th December.
