Inspiring North Copeland’s young people in shaping their community

24th April 2018

Copeland falls within the 10% most deprived districts nationally for health deprivation and disability. Community groups are essential in getting youngsters involved in their local area and encouraging them to keep fit and healthy.

North Copeland Youth Partnership (NCYP), based in the village hall at Parton, near Whitehaven, runs activities for 8-18 year olds over 4 nights a week, attracting around 30 young people each night. Outreach sessions are also offered in Lowca and Moresby.

Since 2005, the charity has received more than £100,000 towards the Youth Development Officer and Youth Worker salaries as well as contributing towards running costs. Volunteer parents from the local area also provide support. Activities encourage children and young people to work alongside the local Parish Council and other community members to make the area a better place for all ages and keeps them physically active. Youngsters help make decisions on what improvements can be made to where they live and help with any fundraising needed.

One young teenager has been a member since she was 8 and takes part in Cheer Fitness and Fun and has done since it started. She is not very confident but excels in the activity and is taking part in competitions and winning prizes. She also helps the group’s younger members become more active and is a great role model.

Valda Young, Youth Development Officer, said: “The youth club keeps young people active in their local community. It provides an opportunity for intergenerational work and community engagement and helps to provide a sense of feeling more safe and secure. It is good to see youngsters excelling at their chosen activities, becoming more confident and keeping fit and healthy.”
