St Thomas’ Community Connection Holiday Club in Kendal was established in 2003 to provide primary school age children with fun and safe activities during the October half term.
The Holiday Club operates in a high deprivation area of Kendal. Families who are vulnerable and disadvantaged are specifically invited to attend and free transport is provided.
The number of children attending each year has increased substantially to a maximum of 150 with a waiting list being required.
Typical activities include singing, art, craft and games on four consecutive mornings of the half term week. On the Wednesday evening the children’s families are invited to join in and see what the children have achieved in the course of the week. Children from a range of social backgrounds are encouraged to cooperate and develop friendships within a friendly and safe environment.
Funding enabled the 50 volunteers at the Holiday Club to continue their good work and even to expand the range of activities on offer. Volunteers have benefited working with the wider community and developing skills in leadership, service and cooperation, while sharing their skills with the children.
Grant funding means that the Holiday Club will continue to grow and build upon its success to date, while providing an invaluable service to the community.
