Family Support Fund

Grants to provide targeted financial support for families in financial hardship to relieve urgent need or distress.

Who can apply?
• families in need, distress or financial hardship who reside in West Cumbria and who have limited resources.
• have exhausted all other sources of funding
• applications must be endorsed and submitted by a referral organisation acting in their professional capacity.

They must also be:
• a family on a low income who are raising a child (16 and under) or young person (up to the age of 25) with a long-term disability, disabling condition or life-limiting illness
and
• be living in the former districts of Allerdale or Copeland

What will the fund support:
• tackle disadvantage in rural communities
• tackle disadvantage in pockets of deprivation, including the 20% most-deprived wards

Examples of projects supported?
• to provide essential basic requirements, relating to washing, cooking, sleeping and clothing.
• emergency household costs, food, or clothing expenses, costs to repair or replace damaged property or goods; contributions to accommodation costs and wider household essentials
• in exceptional cases of genuine emergency where existing housing support schemes do not meet this exceptional need, the fund can be used to support housing costs

How much can you apply for?
The usual payment is £150 per person with a maximum award of £1,000 per household. In exceptional circumstances the per person award can be increased, but a clear rationale must be provided.

Exceptional circumstances may include:
• the applicant is in financial hardship (e.g. housing related debt)
• the applicant is fleeing an abusive relationship,
• the applicant has children under the age of five
• the applicant has underlying health conditions
