HSBC and Foundation celebrate giving in Cumbria

GREEN projects will benefit from an HSBC fund that now stands at £60,000. Area director Mike Barr dug deep to hand over the final £30,000 to Cumbria Community Foundation. The Foundation will invest the money and use the income to support environmental projects. Mr Barr celebrated with Foundation staff at a previously funded environmental project, the Rydal Hall Community Garden. Local volunteers share horticultural skills and grow their own fruit and vegetables there. The Community Foundation’s Director, Andrew Beeforth, said: “It’s super that the bank’s fund is now at £60,000. It will enable us to make some really interesting and worthwhile grants to environmental projects.” Mr Barr said: “This particular project is so exciting because it’s a fund that will provide income for projects for generations to come. It also complements HSBC’s green credentials. The bonus for me is that so many staff were involved in community activity this year. We’re keen to not just make donations but to build community links through volunteering that will benefit as many people as possible.” Across Cumbria in 2006, HSBC was able to support 14 community projects involving 104 of their staff as volunteers. Mr Barr praised his staff, saying Cumbria had one of the best track records of any region in the UK.
