Dawn Clark, Regional Community Projects Manager at Your Housing Group said: “The £25,000 NMP grant is greatly appreciated and will help us to deliver and expansion in our Workington Local Food project, offering sessions within South Workington around the themes of food growing, horticulture, cooking and healthy eating; as part of the Food for Life project.

“The project aims to help people become more self-reliant, by growing their own food which will also enable them to cut the cost of food shopping. The project will cater for a diverse range of residents and needs.”

The housing association also want to support local facilities by holding activities in community centres as well as enhancing the local environment.

Willie Slavin, a trustee of Cumbria Community Foundation, and chairman of the West Cumbria Grants Panel, which is responsible for allocating the grants said: “The attraction of the project was that the housing association was working with the community and going beyond the usual scope. It’s a combination of this and reclaiming land for more sustainable use that made it an attractive project to fund.”

Cumbria Community Foundation is still accepting funding for NMP Community grants with the deadline on March 6, 2015.
