Grants for flood resilience and resistance
The Community Foundation Trustees have set aside £0.5m of the Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund to support households with flood resistance and resilience. This is in addition to the £362,000 received from South Lakeland, Eden and Allerdale district councils.
Grants will be in the region of £500-£2,000 and households must have been been flooded in November 2009. The usual Flood Recovery Fund eligibility criteria will be applied ie priority will be given to households with low annual incomes, people on benefits, pensioners, disabled people etc.
The Foundation is currently in negotiation with a local supplier so that grant applicants will benefit from a discount should they choose to purchase their items from the supplier.
The Foundation is aware that some households have already purchased items and grants will be considered retrospectively.
Households who have already submitted flood resilience applications do not need to reapply and will be contacted directly by the Foundation.
Full details and application forms should be available here shortly - possibly around the end of June - and from local libraries etc.
Flood Appeal Ceases Active Fundraising for the Flood Recovery Fund Appeal
The trustees of the Community Foundation have decided to stop actively fundraising for the Cumbria Flood Recovery Fund Appeal.
We are asking people to stop making new donations or arrange new events for the Appeal because we are in the very fortunate position to be holding sufficient funds to meet the likely demand. If you have already planned to hold an event, please do so as we have made our decision expecting that more money will still come into the Appeal.
The first priority for the Appeal is to help individuals and families and so far we have made 830 awards to individuals and grants worth £1.25m. We continue to make awards daily to people affected by the floods. Demand for the Appeal funds will continue for at least 18 months. We expect to spend all of the Appeal funds. Some quotes from people assisted by the Appeal
“Thank you very much for your cheque for £750. A real lifesaver”
“Very many thanks for the cheque received this morning...this money will help towards our heating costs.... Thank you from two grateful pensioners”
“Thank you very much for such generosity. The cheque will most certainly help with outstanding bills. Life gets a bit tough at times like this and your help has made things a lot easier. Thank you for your friendship and thoughts”
“Thank you so much for the cheque for £500 received from the Fund. At such a stressful and expensive time it means such a lot to us to realise so many people care about us.”
Thank you to everyone who has made it possible for us to provide this assistance.
We set up the Cumbria Flood Recovery Funds for individuals and families and for voluntary groups who suffered in the flooding on 19 November. We are also administering similar funds for three district councils - the Allerdale Borough Council Flood Recovery Fund, Eden District Council Flood Recovery Fund and the South Lakeland District Council Flood Recovery Fund, which primarily offer help with flood resilience work. We are writing to all affected households in these districts about this.
Grants from the Cumbria Flood Recovery Funds are available for individuals and families and for groups supporting them. Please note that we can no longer accept applications for financial hardship because of the closure of the Workington bridges. Individuals may also wish to apply to the United Utilities Trust Fund which, whilst primarily concerned with water charges, can also help with other costs.
