Sellafield contractor super team to help Appeal

3rd February 2015

Employees and contractors of Sellafield Ltd have joined forces and created a super Sellafield ‘Big Sleep Out’ team to raise money and keep older people warm this winter.

Workers from Balfour Beatty, Jacobs and Amec Foster Wheeler, the three companies on the Box Encapsulation Project at Sellafield, have signed up to take part in Cumbria Community Foundation’s Big Sleep this weekend in a field beside The Low Wood Bay Hotel in Windermere.

Rachel Beech, the team organiser and Head of Supply Chain at Balfour Beatty said: “With energy prices still high, elderly people face a real problem in keeping warm during the harsh winter months. The BEP Delivery Team are really looking forward to sleeping outside and raising money for this very worthwhile cause”

The Winter Warmth Fund is distributed to older people, living in Cumbria through partner organisations. Age UK West Cumbria have already allocated grants of more than £20,000 within Allerdale and Copeland but only have £1,000 left of the fund – that’s only enough to help eight people. All the money raised from the Big Sleep goes directly into the Foundation’s Winter Warmth Appeal.

Joining the BEP Team on the evening will be another Sellafield team lead by Sellafield’s Head of Socio-Economics Helen Fisher.

Andy Beeforth, Chief Executive of Cumbria Community Foundation said: “In five years the Winter Warmth Appeal has helped thousands of people in our area.  We understand that fuel poverty is a serious issue, especially in Cumbria, and this appeal helps keep older people in our county warm and safe in the winter. The Big Sleep is a great challenge to raise money and awareness of the struggles older people can face during the winter.”

If you think you could be up to the Big Sleep challenge, entry is open until 12pm on Thursday 5th February. There’ll be live music, a family film and lots of entertainment to keep your mind from the cold. Register online or call 01900 825760.
