Our spectacular picture, taken on Buttermere by Charlie Hedley  shows teenager Matt Whitehurst somehow defeat logic by pedalling on top of the 75ft deep lake – without sinking. Matt, a Cockermouth School pupil from Papcastle, Cumbria, carried out the jaw-dropping stunt to raise awareness of the Jennings Rivers Ride. Matt’s proud dad Steve is a member of the Cockermouth mountain rescue team and was one of the first members of the emergency services to arrive in the town.  He said: “I can’t and won’t reveal how I did it, but plenty of people saw me and they’ll confirm it wasn’t a camera trick. “The photos are real.”

Cyclists can choose to take part in one of three separate rides taking place on the day – the family ride, the middle distance event or the Big Day Out ride – all starting and finishing in Keswick. For further information click here.

Hello, thank you for sharing your opinions in this article. This is really a very nice website.

  3. chookiat says:

I am trying to find the video clip from his name on the internet. But not found any thing on that. If people saw him, I think only one clip is shown on the internet….. Am I right? I only found the same picture on the internet in every websites.

  4. Ryan Dobson says:

The big question is; are all you physics genius’s going to join us for the Jennings River Ride or are you too busy calculating tyre pressures and water mass.

And for the record… He’s just going really, really fast. I’ve got him down at the bookies to beat that Wilson character on the Big Day Out…. See you all there.

  5. marko says:

well. if this was real, shouldnt be water splashing all around him and wheels, or he invented the most efficient form of transport on the water

  6. James Gordon says:

It’s like the half-pint money shot– your mind wants to believe it when you know that it is entirely impossible!

  7. James Gordon says:

It’s like a film where the guy gets off a half-pint money shot. Your mind really wants to believe it when you know it’s entirely impossible.

  8. Believe says:

If God can perform a miracle like this, he can surely cause the tires not to shoot up spray. Have faith, and believe!

  9. albertvonard says:

For anyone still following this article? Most of you are correct about a support devise under the bike & beneath the water. Direct your attention to the boys right leg. That image is very blurry. It shows his foot in the stirrup. Just below the pedal we see the top of some sort of beam, made of wood or iron, sticking out of the surface of the water! The devise looks redwood or burgundy in color. Now follow the leg upward and you will see what looks like a black Knee brace? Moving upward again, look closely & you will see the flesh toned top of his thigh? Curious, that his bicycle pants cover up the same thigh area on his left leg? So what happened to the pants on the right? Now move your eyes upward again back to the knee area. Zoom in on the image. The suspect knee brace is actually a support strap!! Hidden behind the leg is a mounting pole where the mysterious knee support is actually an anchor strap?! for the hidden rod. That rod is Tightly fastened to the beam under the water. Where did the beam come from? My theory? It was always in the lake anyway. On
some lakes when water levels are a safety concern for boaters and such, the lake residents and State often install these beams. The department of natural resources, use these depth markers for Topographic maps or the stocking of fish species. The more I look at this kid leaning so far on the bike, it’s about to fall over! The more ignorant the stunt seems

  10. Michael says:

I saw a magic trick like this once. They had clear plexiglass tables underneath them. Holds them up but hard to see just under the water.

  11. p. lewis says:

I think it’s an underwater boat with a paddle wheel underwater, it would move quite slowly, but with the weight of the cyclist, it could be floating just underwater with a controlled air source (scuba tank) I got a big kick out of the guy that thinks compressed air floats better in the tires,,,ahahahahaha

    • tom says:

I agree w the idea him using the bucks socket gears to drive an U/W paddlewheel device mounted below plexiglass.

  12. yureri says:

he asked Criss Angel how to do it lol..

  13. pam says:

show me a video and i will believe it.

  14. ken says:

Zoom in on the picture, and you will see the wood sticking up out of the water under the back pedal.

  15. Danyielle says:

FAKE!!! But I hope he makes money though for the charity…Even if the picture give away everything. >:D

  16. ken says:

There is wood sticking up out of the water under his back pedal ?

  17. Thom Richer says:

Simple. I have a similar photo of myself, and family sitting on lawn chairs in the middle of Lake Michigamme in the U.P. of Michigan. How?
We are on top of a “sandbar.” I would surmise, he is doing the same.

    Thom

  18. Zzzoney says:

When walking on ice it is the same as walking on water as described. Climates change geographically between land areas, every now and then and what used to be real cold is now warming. The sun is not going supernova and blowing up into a massive star for another billion years or so just chill a while…

  19. steve says:

the power of farts is at work here.

  20. Ram says:

Great job Daryll, I also noticed there’s no wake behind him. We were not lied to just a play on words not unlike what politicians and sales people do.

  21. Frank says:

He got dropped by a helicopter that wasn’t flying low enough to disturb the water… The guy kept his feet still so it would be a clear shot. The camera person on the boat had a high speed camera that was taking MANY pictures at a time showing him in slow motion. They picked out the best picture showing his bicycle sitting on the water for that fraction of a second, and posted it.

    • Randall says:

NoCanDo friend – the helicopter would have to be at least 150-200 ft high not to disturb the water, and at that drop me thinks him and the bike would hit pretty hard.. Good Effort on that thought tho -

  22. justice says:

that is a a miracle so his witness should come out and defend if it really true as he claims.

  23. justice says:

that is nature sometimes horrible and dangerous but we still live.

    • lisa carson says:

if you ever watched myth busters you would know how it’s done even if you knew any thing about science youwould know that it is imposable to walk or ride in this case on water only one man has ever walked on water

  24. Angie says:

and I’m not saying the photo isn’t real, it clearly is by the reflection in the water. however, the event, the peddling on top of the water is not. good job with it though!

  25. Angie says:

    1. if he was actually “peddling” his bike, there would be a spray coming off the rear and front tires, with the spray on his rear tires coming up to hit him in the back. 2. the photographer had to be positioned in a location convenient to take the photo, whether it be shore or a boat.

logical conclusion, it was staged and a platform was built just under the water’s surface for him to “pose” in a way that makes him look like he is riding over the top of the water. I did this in a photoshoot with a high school senior and his skateboard once.

  26. Sama says:

Lord Jesus, forgive my joke. Matt is just driving everyone crazy. Amen

  27. Sama says:

Come-on guys, can’t you see he’s the anointed one. Only this time he has chosen to ride on water and not walk.

  28. Todd says:

Prove to me that this is real and I will make a charitable donation.Reading all comments listed proves to me that anything is possible when you just beleive,or is this whole story just a trick to CASH in.

  29. tim says:

Cool.Hec,bcos we dont understand it dose’nt make it impossible. At least he is the first to give it a try, give that to him. Now, whats really is the story?

  30. Gordon Sisson says:

I believe that next time Matt has decided he will part the water and ride across the bottom of the lake as he did not like the spray from the rear wheel due to having no mudguards on :-)

  31. paul says:

Wheels are obviously not in motion in the picture. Anyone who has ever ridden a bike on wet pavement knows that the tires kick up quite a spray when in contact with water.

  32. tevin says:

    i think he Photoshopped it

  33. Gigi says:

He’s using a platform. It could be a rope or something floating while his wheels slide to accelerate the floating platform.

  34. matthew says:

there is something spiritual behind this event.

    • mac says:

no there isn’t…there is something solid under the bike

    • Billy says:

there’s nothing special going on here and dont make this a religious calling. Do you see a trail of water behind him indicating that he is actually moving? Its fake

    • Tim says:

You’re right Matt. God gave a man the power to dream up a way of getting world wide attention to a benefit he wanted to support. God does that for me when I ask Him. Just not to this degree. Maybe I should ask for greater accomplishments…

  35. herman says:

lie not, prove science is wrong with explanation and we shall believe u.

    • ken says:

Like the wood sticking up out of the water under his back pedal ?

  36. Douglas says:

lots and lots of helium in his tires (heh)~

  37. Daryll says:

Smart as owt flarcher : ) Everyone is right, and everyone is wrong. Some are even both. I think I have an explanation…a LOGICAL, one too. First off, NOTHING CAN RIDE A BIKE ACROSS AN OPEN LAKE! ( Lol…actually “nothing” CAN ride a bike across an open lake–Catching on yet?? Second…it did state “stunt”. Here’s the KICKER….READY? READY? If you READ….I MEAN BRAINIAC READ the sentence, tha answer is there. You see him doing EXACTLY what the article states. And just so you know, those of you asking to see video of it…the video would show you the exact same thing the article states. Here goes—The article states “somehow defeat logic by pedalling on top of the 75ft deep lake – without sinking”. He probably did use a platform of some kind: floating, wood, diamond and gem-encrusted. THAT DOESNT MATTER, so don’t trip yourself up holding on to that one too long. And yes, he is probably using a kickstand or support arm/bracket…heck for all we know, he could just be hovering there attached to overhead wires and harnesses, holding the bike….LETS NOT GET TRIPPED UP though. We want the “real” HOW, not the WHATS. Did you get a piece of the puzzle from the quote?
    — OK, I DON’T KNOW WHAT OR HOW [HE] DID IT…but according to the article, here would be my logical solution which involves vocabulary…He’s out there ON the LAKE, STATIONARY (however done)…and HE PEDALS THE BIKE——-READ READ and REREAD. The article states “pedalling on top of the 75ft deep lake – without sinking”. NO WHERE DOES IT SAY THAT HE RODE ACROSS THE LAKE— HE PEDALLED ON TOP OF. Reminded me of an article from a year ago writen about a Cumbrian mass killer named Derrick Bird and how he went on a “dry run” to try to plan his second stage. The “dry run” bit just got the best of me with all of this pedalling on water. Not exactly sure how he CAN’T reveal. BUT, my guess…either any or all of the devices OR the “stunt” itself is patented physically or intellectually—OR number 2, he may honestly not know how to explain such verbose word-play.But than again, he is 16 from at least the semi-rural UK., and I’m sure he can’t or won’t tell, and plenty of people did see him, and it is NOT a “camera trick”, and they probably are REAL! See? Even if you HAD video of him performing this “stunt”, you very well could be sitting there watching him pedal on the top of the lake. WELL FOLKS— 5-6 hours later from the start of this comment, 1 table of contents and 1 index of a book to be published, 1 business proposal, and 8 cups of coffee later, I must bid you adieu….Remember in this day and age of technology, sometimes all it takes to confuse someone, is to let them think. • DMZ says:

    • Tim says:

      Thanks for the humor Daryll!

  38. Hiranand Dodani says:

Practice make the man perfect,I think he would have done it.

  39. mary says:

yall so silly. of course there’s no video. he’s not riding. he’s standing still on a platform. you can see the support wood under his right foot. !!the point is he’s getting attention for a charity!! bless him.

    • Gigi says:

U probably right, there is no movement of water on the back wheels showing that the water is moving. He’s just standing there.

  40. titan3 says:

this can also be done with a bike.

  41. Edward G says:

If you look at or under his right foot there is something under it. Me personally I think he is on a floating dock, “Dock Flotations” http://championdocks.com/dock_flotations

all he needs is one that will keep him afloat just right so you can’t see it.

  42. mike says:

Why not just enjoy the photo and let it just be!!!

  43. Sho Sho says:

Maybe Jesus is back. The good thing is that he is doing it for charity. Thanks Matt and be blessed.

  44. donna says:

Real cool pic! But I wonder if he got WET? I wonder if I can teach my dog to walk on water! LOL!

  45. A. D. Onn says:

Good job boy! But only Jesus did walk on water.

  46. LOU says:

The old saying goes! You can fool some of the people all the time, but not all the people some of the time.

    • Tim says:

Good ole Abe Lincoln. But I think it goes; “You can please some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” Don’t matter how he did it, what matters is that what “He” wanted to do happened. Publicity. Great move Matt.

  47. jodemyj says:

hmmm..there is no point to say either true or not…just imagine the picture taken..they have miss something that can be believable…they miss the water spreading while cycling the lake…good editor but not much..as i think…but they are happy…(smile)

  48. Andy Beeforth says:

Keep the suggestions coming folks – and join us for the Rivers Ride on 18th September to help people in need in our local communities.

Glad you enjoyed the photo and thanks to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue team for the set up

    • Daryll says:

lol..I think I might have had something. Just have to wait for it to be approved. It is kinda long though, but thorough, fun, and informative. I’ve been up 2 days trying to study for a test AND get business stuff done, so between 4 different things, I still managed to finish it : ) But I did fail to just say “great job” to young guy. Keep up the great work MATT! Looks like marketing or public relations is just 4 years of college away for you.

  52. jack says:

No way any fool who thinks he can ride on water is crazy. Why is the bike wheel not sinking because he is using a ramp or something.

  53. fen says:

This is interesting…..it can be possible to ride on a lake if your a magician. So i guess he’s a magician.

    • marck santiago says:

      This is true.

  54. Inayat khalil says:

Every thing looking real and may be real,
but who took the photograph, ask him, what he
says about this picture, while taking this photo.

  55. hasan ali says:

lemme guess…its easy logically… all you need is a special tyre and tube… the tubes that can hold compressed air with enough pressure not to sink in the water…and tyres with deep cuts that can push water back to move ahead :)

    • Ari H says:

It would be impossible to keep your balance unless you were going very fast, but yes this is possible assuming that his tires were inflatable. The only flaw with this photo is that he’s clearly not moving (or very fast, at least) so it’s safe to call rubbish. Also, if you check this out on Yahoo! News they have a bigger picture. If you look underneath his foot that is closest to the water. It appears that he is standing on something and they tried to pass it off as a reflection.

  56. Shashank says:

Not to deride the photo or anything, but it is obvious the cycle is stood on a platform & in a stationary position. Good job anyway to promote a event!

  57. billy r. linao says:

a man told me before he wanted to project a miracle of himself walking on water…so the next morning in a village he was seen walking on water…but what the villagers did not know was this man’s group constructed a walkpath the night before while the tide was low…the young biker could have done it too.

  58. john says:

what is important? he want life for people. It amazing ride on water…if you think it fake..go help someone this wk or do something for others…if you still don’t believe…go to a church this sunday….if you still don’t believe go try it and make sure you know how to swim first.:-))

    • Ari H says:

Going to church will make me believe that someone could sit motionless and simply “look” like they are riding a bike on water? I’m not even going to waste any more time scoffing at your ignorance. Find a bigger picture of this and it’s obvious he is standing on something.

    • Daryll says:

I actually like your response John. Took the words right out of my mouth.

    • Tim says:

I agree John. God may not have given him the power to ride on water, but He gave him the idea and the ways of accomplishing his goal of promoting a charitable event and asking for nothing in return. So Ari H., God don’t give good people doing good things for people, superpowers. He just gives them the abilities to succeed at their goals. And the more they help others, asking for nothing in return, the greater the abilities He gives them. And He makes it sooo satisfying to the soul and heart when you use His powers to help others and ask for nothing in return, no man-made drug can even come close. God Bless you Matt!!!

  59. tywone says:

how in heavin did u do that lol

  60. Terry S.. says:

    • Daryll says:

Awesome comment Rhoda. We need more great people like you in the world : )

    • Tim says:

I agree with Daryll. As you can see from the vast majority of the other comments made, you are a special person. You had the ability, and took the effort to see a successful accomplishment after some creative thinking, not trying to discredit his creative thinking by telling us you have his illusion figured out. It may not be God’s power allowing him to ride on the water (as it appears in the pic), but God gave him the idea and desire to do it to advertise an event for the benefit of a charity, not himself. And the ability to design a way of doing it to create the illusion. Not to discredit Matt’s work of art, but Matt just did what you see when you’re watching David Copperfield. It just wasn’t on stage in Vegas. I saw and appreciated his success also. So lets keep seeing and appreciating the good things in life while the ones that choose to, wallow in their unknown misery.

using glass under the water to ride on top

  81. ROUNDMAN99 says:

There is no way he is riding his bike on water. The most obvious thing is there is “NO WAKE” on the water. For this to happen he needs to be completely “OUT” of the water.

  85. WJG says:

Look at the water between the wheels and extending out about a foot. The water seems to be flatter than the surrounding water. It looks like the bike is on something that is covered by the water. I would like to see him do it on Lake Erie (it is shallow) or any of the other great lakes. Or is it just photo shopped and the lake is one layer and him moving through a puddle another layer.

  86. Thomas says:

In the picture, you can see a “line” in the path of the bike. That is what ever he was riding on.

  87. futz says:

He’s riding on plexi-glass or some other submerged structure that you can’t see at that angle. See the mythbusters episode.

  88. Jim says:

He must of had a sometype of flat ramp just under the water that he road the bike on giving the illusion that he road it on top of the water.

  89. dan says:

curious why he needed the helmet

  90. asad khan says:
