n2n Fund (Nought to Nineteen)

To support positive activities for children and young people in Cumbria

Funded by Cumbria County Council

£144,000 available this year plus £54,000 from the Children's Fund specifally for 5-13 year olds. The majority of this is already committed

Purpose of the fund
To support projects that
* reduce the barriers to activities and services for children and young people that others take for granted
* prevent children and young people developing problems that lead to difficulties later in life
* contribute to one or more of the Every child matters themes
* develop the capacity of organisations to engage more effectively with the children, young people and families they support

Who can apply?
Locally managed voluntary, community or self help groups in Cumbria

Last year we gave 29 grants for an average of £4,870 and approved 72% of applications from the main fund together with 15 grants for an average of £3,600 and approved 71% of applications from the Children's Fund portion

Examples of activities supported
* playground refurbishment
* film skills workshops
* club for under 11s
* primary cricket
* team building and participation weekend
* peer mentoring project
* climbing wall project

Beneficiaries
Children and young people 0-19 years (0-25 years with learning difficulties)

How much can you apply for?
£500-£7,000 a year over one to three years. Awarding the maximum grant will be the exception. Grants are more likely to be one off or over two years. The average grant is expected to be in the region of £4,500.

Priorities
* new and small groups
* groups are welcome to include capacity building support in an application

Projects must demonstrate they are
* addressing a local need
* a creative new response to local issues or are an existing successful project
* engaging with hard to reach children and young people (this might be because of where they live or the nature of the issues being addressed)
*
developing their income base where possible
* maximising local resources by working with other organisaitons where appropriate, and
* either
involving or willing to develop the capacity of the organisation to involve children, young people, parents, carers, members or clients in the decision making of the organisation and its activities

We will not fund
* individuals and activities that only help one child
* statutory or national organisations
* activities where the primary purpose is to promote religious beliefs or where people are excluded on religious grounds
* grant making bodies
* organisations that already hold a previous grant from the n2n fund
* overseas trips
* day trips unless there is a benefit beyond the trip
* minibuses and other vehicles

If you are successful you will need to list the outcomes you expect from your project (see example) and keep attendance records for projects funded (see example).
