To promote excellence in the arts and cultural life of Cumbria

Background
The Fund is the result of an initiative by Miss M Burkett and friends to help individuals in the arts. Its aim is to encourage individuals of excellence in their chosen field of the arts. Individuals are prioritised due to the comparative lack of funding available to them.

£1,200 available this year

Last year we gave two grants totaling £1,750 from six applications

Who can apply?
Individuals resident in the county of Cumbria.

The Fund will not normally support voluntary and community groups.

If you are interested, please read the following details carefully along with our Applying for Money guidelines page.

What will the fund support?
Because funds available for distribution are limited, there is an expectation that supported activities will reflect the highest level of achievement and excellence.
We would hope that activities also introduce artists’ work to new audiences.

Examples of activities the fund would like to support
* research on Cumbrian monuments and sculpture
* canvas and paint for MACFA show
* dance tuition
* publication of photographic booklet

We will not fund
* activities solely for school children
* artists in residence
* people outside the geographic area of the county of Cumbria

Decision making
Recommendations are made by a specialist panel. The panel may wish to meet applicants to discuss and view their work.

When to apply
Applications are considered through the year.

How much can you apply for?
There is no upper or lower limit but grants would usually be under £500. If you wish to apply for a larger grant please talk to Foundation staff before applying

We're delighted to report that talented ballet dancer Nicole Dixon of Brigham, who received a grant from the Foundation's Cultural Fund last year, has just won a Scholarship to study Dance and Music at Tring Park. Nicole is delighted with the award which is only given to five children with elite classical and music potential each year . Nicole's mother Lorraine Dixon wrote to us to say "We are so grateful for all your support and kindness given to Nicole and we will keep you informed of her progress." Well done Nicole!
