Cedric Robinson MBE

The High Sheriff is indebted to Cedric Robinson MBE – the Queen’s Guide to the Sands and Freeman of the City of Lancaster for generously giving his time and support for this charity walk on Sunday 6th July in aid of the High Sheriff’s Crimebeat  Fund.

The Queen’s Guide to the Sands is the royally appointed guide to crossing the sands of Morecambe Bay. Cedric Robinson was appointed to the post in 1963, the 25th guide in 700 years. He lives in the 700 year old guides cottage which is owned by the crown.

Over the years Cedric has led more than 500,000 people across the sands and despite being over 80 years old has no plans to retire from a job which still gives him so much pleasure.

Until the building of the railway in 1857, the cross sands route had been a major transport route in the area with the monks of Furness at Cartmel priory providing guides.

In modern times a crossing of the sands has become a popular challenge for charity fundraisers with Cedric often leading the groups.
