Reducing social isolation with art for older people

The Neighbourhood Care Independence Programme (NCIP) is a partnership of 33 delivery organisations providing a range of services to help keep older people independent around the county.

Prism Arts worked with NCIP partner The Glenmore Trust to provide weekly creative art sessions to reduce social exclusion and support carers by offering activities in the day. The workshops were open to all, though stroke survivors and those experiencing memory loss were particularly encouraged to attend.

Participants worked with professional artists at Carlisle Business Interaction Centre trying a range of art techniques including collage, textiles and drawing.

A participant said: “I can’t walk far and I’m stuck in a lot. I look forward so much to coming and meeting with people.”

Some of the attendees went on to work with a textile artist in Carlisle Library, producing work to be displayed in an exhibition. One visitor said: “The artwork is all so impressive and could grace walls in any home.”

A Dementia Awareness Day was also delivered in partnership with the Carlisle Dementia Network and Tullie House. A range of providers attended, promoting services, including workshops and participation opportunities.

One participant commented: “I would have fallen through the cracks if it hadn’t been for this.”

The Neighbourhood Care Independence Programme is funded by Cumbria County Council and the money is distributed through, Managed Service Provider, Cumbria Community Foundation.
